Position through contextualising
For this brief, I looked into many different references always in relation with the notion of experimental publishing and expressive typography. My main reference was the post-structuralist movement and the concept of deconstruction by Jacques Derrida.
Although I decided to use the Conditional design Manifesto as a reference to work on/with for this brief. This comes from the fact that my practice – or what I want it to be – seems closely related to theitr idea of design, have process as an important factor of the work. The process is the product. Moreover, the idea of system is also a strong point, where they use ‘logic’ as a set of rules/constraints to work on an input.
1st set of iterations:
For this first set of experiments I decided to use the Conditional Design Manifesto as my content. Although, the way I worked on it was in relation to other references that you can find in the annotated bibliography.
1. I played with the scale and the format of the page to see how this can impact the experience once has with the content. I published it using different papers, format, bindings…
For some of the experiments, I decided to combine the format with the typesize, so A4=4pts…

2. looking at the idea of inside/outside that have been expressed in postmodernism and post-structuralism with Derrida, and architects such as Jameston and Gehry. Working here with newspaper titles and articles.

3. Also played with the copier to see after how many copies of copy the text was becoming illegible and just a black blurb on the page.

feedback:
- use the copier to play and make the material of the page legible or not > decay of the message
- investigate thr formal properties of the references using the copier > what is it? where is it from? how to read it? the context?
- using the printer to study the reference
- the text is about process and I show the process ++
- how can the printer distort and pick up details?
- turn the text into something else
- text is being transformed through the process
2 set of iterations:
Following the feedback, I started by studying the text and looking at its formal properties:

All of these iterations are thus based on the exploration of a specific aspect of the text. It can be in its form, its layout, its shape, the way it is published, the marks it has… All made using only the copier.

feedback:
+ really like the deconstruction and exaggeration of the visual quality of the manifesto
– Don’t really get a sense of what you are trying to do with these iterations, what are you trying to deconstruct.
+ The different iterations act as a really good response of the the manifesto and what it was trying to do
+ Publication looks good and is put together well
>>It would be interesting to see if you combine the separate iteration to form a singular output
– It is missing the end goal that is mentioned in the manifesto.
>>The next part could be to formulate an end goal and use these iteration as parts for the said end goal
+ The iterations are successful in showing the sequential deconstruction of the text and its material
>> try and copy some of the words and phrase using the process
– Editing is lacking, in the sense that it ended up following the process blindly.
+ Its a very focused experimentation
+ The iteration work really well visually
+ Its show well how the source material changes as it goes through the same process multiple times
>> the publication could work well if it translates the manifesto as a walkthrough
